Across America - We've been there
Iola, KS
After reading a few of the posts in this thread you'll know we hardly ever make reservations when traveling from place to place. During our short stop in Iola we were heading for Branson, MO where we did have reservations.
Following US-54 east, just before entering Iola, we spotted the Iola RV Park just of the highway. What a great little park. FHU 50 amp pull thru sites with a nice country store and friendly people. Pulled in, disconnected, and found a good signal for the dish. We had time to spare and spent a couple of days exploring the small KS town of Iola. Went to some yard sales, ate in a downtown dinner and rode the trolley. All at very reasonable prices.
Traveling US-54 in Greenwood county exposes you to some of the largest and most beautiful cattle grazing lands in the country.
The RV Park link is active. Clicking on the pictures will make them larger.

Back before KS cut taxes to business and wealthy folks we had a lot of money for infrastructure and that park was frequently full to the brim with road workers. That all stopped 6 years ago. It's a nice little park, glad to see they have survived.

I always love to see farming county, cattle, grain it doesn’t matter. I try to avoid cities. I’m a country boy.

There's nice little campground behind the hotel in Seneca, Kansas. It works on an honor system. You pay according to what services you need. You put your cash in an envelope and drop it in the box on the shed. The sites all have concrete strips for your tires, nice and level. The bathrooms and laundry room are the cleanest I've seen. The wifi is good. There is also a pond with fish that you can catch and release. This is one of the nicest little campgrounds we have ever stayed at.

Nice to see you can find spots without a reservation. We did a road trip with our kids, when I was recuperating from a shoulder surgery. We did 20 states in 21 days, and out of all of it we made only 3 reservations. I think the most fun is not knowing where you'll end up. To this date, that was one of the best trips of a lifetime.

The best trip we ever took (and there have been many) was in 2018, for 61 days. We went to Sudbury, ON, UP Michigan, Minnesota, North & South Dakota, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Washington State, Vancouver Island, to mainland BC and back home across Canada. I had to make reservations for the ferries, a train trip and an Antelope Canyon tour. I figured since all that was carved in stone, I may as well make reservations for the campgrounds too (those we were able to).
This was the best trip we ever took, not just for all the great scenery and new friends we met, but also knowing most nights that we had a place to stay. We had planned on three Walmarts, but at the last minute changed our minds due to the heat. We were able to find a campsite both nights. The places I could not reserve, we hoped for the best. In one of them, we took the last site.
There are pros and cons to winging it for campgrounds vs. reserving, and we have done both. We prefer the reservations because it takes the stress out of finding something at the last minute. Doing all your homework ahead of time also means you have time (and internet) to check all the reviews, etc.

We sort of got used to surprises during our full time traveling years. For most of the time we just meandered along and enjoyed our freedom from working and providing. On this occasion we were heading west. We had decided to get off I-20 just short of the MS state line and venture across the MS heartlands to the scenic US-61.
While traveling on MS-16 we spotted a billboard advertising the Pearl River Resorts & Casinos. We had no idea the Choctaw Indians had casinos. A few more miles down the road another billboard advertising the Frog Level RV Park.
We had no reservations anywhere else so we decided to stop and check it out. The Frog Level had nice sized FHU 50 AMP sites with CATV. It was about 3 miles from the casino complex right on MS-16 and the casino had a no charge van service to & from the RV Park to the casinos. All we had to do was call old – Johnny on the spot, we called him – and he would arrive and take us to the casino complex.
We spent three nights there and have been back several times because a retired friend of ours took a job at the Silver Moon as a pit boss.

Our normal manner concerning reservations is to make the first 1 or 2 nights as they are relatively local and we have been there numerous times. After that we decide where the next day will take us and make a one night reservation down the road. If we like it there we ask for another night or nights that evening. If no space, we head down the road. We normally have a general direction or destination in mind but try not to set anything in concrete.
Hopefully this Covid has not changed our ability to take the road essentially one day at a time.
Happy Trails Y’all!

Peoria, IL
These pictures were taken while parked at Peoria, IL where one of our traveling companion’s families live.
The parking sites were at Mount Hawley MH & RV Park. Our friends had spent the spring there and we drove-in to meet and do a trek across country that would end in San Diego for a couple of the winter months.
There are a couple of advantages staying at MH locations; site sizes and mail boxes for each site.
Our friends got us a site next to them and we spent three weeks there.

Minot, ND
While spending 10 days at the Grand Forks AFB FAMCAMP we called Roughrider CG at Minot to see about availability because it would be a holiday weekend when we arrived there. They told us they were fully booked but no one on the waiting list and we would be the first should there be a cancelation. We gave them our rig particulars. We could stay where we were until we found a place to stay further west. Two days later the folks at Roughrider called to inform us they had a cancelation. We gave them our credit card number and reserved the site for 10 days.
We were given a nice sized FHU site with an opening for our dish as we had requested. The sites are side by side parking but wide enough not to be a problem.
One of the things we really liked was the delivery of fire wood for the fire ring every day. The camp store was well stocked and there was a very clean washroom with a dryer for every washer.

New Boston, NH
This is a nostalgic picture because the conditions for RV parking such as depicted in this picture no longer exist. We spent 10 days there with 30 AMPs and water with gray water dumping allowed. For us, great fishing was 20 paces north.
If you like getting out in the country and dry camping. Smallish travel trailers such as pop-ups or tents are still allowed on this large piece of land owned and managed by the New Boston AFS recreational department.

Alfred, ME
Having been born and raised in rural Maine I visit there often.
Maine is called “vacation land”. If traveling US-1 in the summertime you’ll find out why. There are a lot of fine RV Parks near or on US-1. They are a little more expensive than rural CGs and get the patrons closer to the attractions.
Being more familiar with the rural CGs that are 15 -20 miles inland and cater to the locals it’s where we stay. This one is in Alfred, ME, the county seat of York County. (It has the largest building in town, the court house).
Alfred has rural attractions such as numerous yard/flea market sales and about a dozen antique shops. However, for serous shopping you’ll have to make a short trip to Sanford.
Our site at Walnut Grove CG was a FHU, 50 AMPs. Your trash is picked-up daily, usually in the morning when they deliver the free news paper. On Fri & Sat nights there is beano (bingo) in the barn with prizes. It’s quiet and well maintained and even has a popular swimming pool area. The CG store is always well stocked with daily needs. The ocean front attractions at Wells Beach and Kennebunkport are about 12-15 miles away – “about 20-25 min down that road” a local might say.

Waldo, FL
When my wife’s brother was being treated at the VA hospital at Gainesville, FL we spent a couple of weeks at the Dixieland RV Park. I didn’t get many pictures because we were on the go a lot.
After talking with the park owner we were offered a FHU site in a newly developed area of the park. Because of our situation we were given a very generous discount.
Right across the street is the Waldo combination farmer’s market/flea market. There is a full service Wal-Mart about a mile away and numerous eateries at Starke, FL.
The park has at least two large music festivals a year. They are very popular and you’d better get reservations during those events, otherwise, there are normally sites available “on the fly”.

Veterans RV Parking
This is about the large American Legion Post #137 at Jacksonville, FL with its thousands of members.
To become a member you have to provide proof of military service; such as a DD-214 card or any military ID card, active or reserve.
Post 137 has a gated RV Park. It has 6 FHU sites and 2 water/elect sites at the edge of the Cedar River. Within the gated area there is a two lane paved boat launching area with floating docks and a large grassy field for parking your tow vehicle and boat trailer while you enjoy boating on the Cedar River/ST. Johns River. (The Cedar River dumps into the St. Johns River about a mile below the RV Park.
The post has a motor cycle club and a fishing club. There is a full sized Olympic pool adjacent to the RV Park with an active tiki bar.
The club has a large horse shoe bar, dancing and meeting area, offices and a full kitchen for serving Sunday breakfasts and Friday steak dinners to order. There is usually live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The RV Park will take reservations but they are not required. Because it’s a private club, RV visitors can only stay 30 days. To stay another 30 days you have to move-out for 24 hours to restart the 30 day limit.
Because we lived at Jacksonville for 24 years we have a lot of friends that are members of this post. So we stay there often. Here are some pictures of the RV parking area. We like site #6 with its unobstructed view of the river and boat launching area.

West Ossipee, NH
A very nice parking site nestled under tree cover at Whit’s End CG. My 1st cousin Jan and her husband Dan owned and managed this CG. We were real close to the Bearcamp River and the CG provided Kayaks and a ride up river a few miles to launch them. Our oldest son (front) was traveling with us at this stop and did the Kayak ride.
The site provided water/elect and gray water dumping so we could stay until we had to dump the black tank.

Beckley, WV
The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and Campground is run by the city and the RV Park is on the coal mine property. Their prices are very reasonable.
There are some tight turns getting to the RV Park but it opens up and getting into one of the FHU sites is pretty easy. The park office and surrounding grounds have numerous mining displays and they also run van tours daily.

Mid-way across MS on I-20 you’ll find a roadside advertisement for Roosevelt SP. It’s a really easy place to spend a night or two and has a lot of well maintained park amenities.
The back-in sites are all listed as being 40’. Our rig is 53’ when connected and we still had a little room to spare. Very few sites have access to dish type signals. However, we did get good reception from our “bat” antenna from stations in Jackson, MS.
