@Ddubya,
Several of the US Agencies managing public lands have generator noise limits and require spark arresting muffler. We chose our generator because it met US National Park Service (NPS) noise requirements and had the required spark arresting muffler (required by the US National Forest Service (NFS)).
Cande and I carried a Champion 2Kw inverter generator on our trip. We used it several times in Alaskan State Parks, US National Parks, US National Forest, and if memory serves we used it in a couple of Canadian National and several Canadian Provincial Parks. We only ran the generator within the specified hours for generator operations. Most of the campgrounds had generator hours posted at the registration kiosk or other obvious places.
When boondocking we tried to be respectful of other boondocking persons when running it.
We didn't have any problems from park officials or campground hosts when we ran our generator.
Most generator manufacturers clearly state whether a generator model meets the NPS and NFS requirements.
Hope this helps.
