Trimmed out Woodworking made replacement grills. You can find the link on Facebook. Earlier in the post is the link. With the grills and insulating under the stairs, I noticed a significant improvement in blocking the excess heat. For me, I'm not likely to be using the gas furnace, at least for the next couple of years when I retire. So closing it off was a no brainer for me.
Other things that I did to improve AC; ensure all vents are taped so air goes in the conditioned space. The fans and skylight shrouds are all open to the space above the ceiling. I used foil taped foam board to insulate around each. The skylight was actually heating the duct running right next to it. Also seal under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. Significant gaps around both allowing heat from basement. Point the vents away from the return air. Don't run the ceiling fan blowing down away from the return air.
I was able to keep inside temp low 70s with on 90+ temp and 90+ humidity.
Hope this helps.
