Personally, I would run the furnace if it's going to be mid 30's. You might be OK but that's pushing it's capabilities.

Hopefully you weren’t running your heat pump when it was freezing. They don’t really help much below 40 degrees. At that point you need to use your propane furnace.

No, not with the thermostat that comes in the rig. You can upgrade to a Microaire Tstat that will give you more programable options
