I did the same thing regarding insulation. I also place a big standard rubber hose washer between the thermistor and the ceiling....trying to keep it less sensitive to how hot/cold it was outside.

I don't know where they got that information. ErnieSC is correct, use a silicone or similar lube, not WD 40.
