We installed ours about 6 months ago and love it. The manufacturer says you should let all the air out at least once per year. Other than that you can leave it inflated. I have been letting the air out when i park it for any length of time. I had same issue with install and did the same as you. Neighbor helped and so did the cardboard. Also use the 4" extension ball as we have a 6' 6" bed. Can't quite make 90 degrees, but it's close. Enjoy. We've put about 1800 miles on it so far.
