Yes, if you put in the pan, it doesn't make sense not to have the drain. On the other hand we've had them in three rigs over the last 12 years of full timing and the only time we had a leak was the year before we went full time and didn't think to put antifreeze in the pump when we stored the rig over the winter. The pump held water that froze and cracked the motor case and cause a small leak. Once I learned from my mistake we never had a water issue again.
