Also, if it hasn't been used but just sitting, the water heater anode rode may be removed. ON the side, there should be a small door about 2 ft x 2 ft or so. Open this and check inside. Also, I think there will be a power switch to heat with the electric instead of gas. You may have to search to find it in this area by the heater.

Oh, if the anode is out don't try to hook up water or you will have a nice flood coming out here!!!
