Our oven needs a flame to heat the thermocouple that opens the gas flow in the oven. When the thermocoulpe is warm enough the pilot will light and then you can set the bake temp. Standing pilot lights burn propane all the time. We don't use the oven a lot so to save propane we don't leave the pilot lit.
