I don’t think that is a dumb question. I am not aware of any manufacturer stating that you MUST use an additive to prevent injection system issues. To me that means these engines are designed to run on ULSD without additives. Do the additives provide some benefit? Ok. Necessary? No.
I don’t think they would manufacturer an engine that required additives. And even if they did, not without strict instructions to always use them.
