I like it! I climb the ladder but, like you, don't like to do so with both hands full of gear to take up top. I've been known to bundle and tie it, then take the end of the rope up the ladder, then pull the rope and tools up from there. I've also been known to take multiple trips up the ladder to deposit tools and parts on the roof.
Nice idea.
