I had a 2004 Silverado diesel. I had a similar trailer - 33.5 ft Montana. I was 400 lb over truck weight. Axles fine. I also read from people that worked at Chevy dealers, the 2500 vs the 3500 was one extra leaf spring. I didn't notice any braking or power problems.

Just whatever you want to do. I made a mistake when I upgraded to a 2012. I thought the 3500 would cost a lot more - wrong. It was around $1500 at that time. And the GVCR was something like 1500 lb more. Check all these numbers out do what youwant.
