Sounds like a sticking caliper me me too. Had the same issue a couple of times on an older Ford P/U. Once it cools back down the piston and seals contract and will work ok for a short while. It will get worse and worse until it fails completely. Replace it and bleed the system, not difficult at all. You may have warped your disc if it got so hot it was smoking, so that may need replacing as well.
