We have stayed on the OBX several times.
Ocracoke Island is our favorite. We stay at the NP Campground.

You are dry camping (no water, electric or sewer). They have a dump station across the road on the way in.
You can fill your freshwater tank there at the potable water faucet or inside the Campground if you have a water bladder.
Generators are OK. They do have quiet hours.
We camped there this year in March. It was unusually cold. We ran out of propane. They do not have propane refills on the island. Had to buy a 20lb tank for the last couple of days.
Take your bikes.
They are very good at guiding you on/off the ferry. You have to book the ferry to Ocracoke in advance.
If you come in from Cedar Island, do NOT fill up with water on Cedar Island. It has the egg smell to it.
We have also camped at Oregon inlet. They do have water and electric sites available here.
And we have stayed at Hatteras KoA. Get the large sites. More elbow room. The other sites are a little tight. If you have kids they will love it. They have many organized activities for them.
Check out the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum and the Wright Brothers memorial.
Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular
