Yeah, it seemed overkill to me at first as well, until I realized that in order to have a low point drain in that line for winterization, you need to be able to shut off the water inside at each end. In my case, it made it easy to add a 4 gallon bottled water pump and bottle to make ice from instead of the campground water which is sketchy in places.
