You can make a smooth cut with a Dremel and a steel rotary blade. I used these instead of crimping and it works great. Just use two on each side. Been on 2 years now and no problems. Like was mentioned makes sure you adjust the cable bracket so it is going in at a 90 degree angle or it will rub and fray again. My bracket was off 1/4”+.
