Towed for years without one. Our new Montana came with the Furrion set and oh my, what a difference. I do use it for lane changes to check clearance and to confirm my side mirror. I do not use it for backing as the distances seem distorted to me. ALWAYS deploy a guide when backing or frequently GOAL!
