Could you provide more detail to as to what "it hasn't worked properly since we purchased it a year ago" means??? Does it work at all?? Blower motor shuts off but compressor still runs at times?? Low volume of air output?? doesn't cool very well?? The thermostat and a/c control board can switch motor speeds, which would fit in with the loose red wire you found.
