I love them for the stability once set up ... but you are not alone:

I HATE them for all 5 reasons you mentioned, except, I do not have a garage to park my 5th wheel trailer in.

I had a road side emergency last summer. I could not get inside the RV because the steps hit against a guardrail! Luckily, I was able to reach inside and grab what I needed to prevent a total disaster.
