Makes you have a lot of respect for the native Americans, early explorers, early settlers, mountain men, and all the others that endured the extreme winter weather with minimum shelter and lived to tell about it. Although the number who didn’t survive, I am sure, is huge.

I grew up in a house that was not insulated and we only had two small unvented gas space heaters. And never used those at night for fear of carbon monoxide. But we had a lot of quilts my grandmother made. Piled them on until you could hardly move. And never thought much about it. Just normal. Of course we also didn’t have air conditioning when morning lows were mid 80’s and daily highs were often 102-105 or higher. Again, just normal. Too old and soft for that now.
