ATF fluid would also turn dark in color.
Something for you to consider if you are original or newer and have never siphoned the fluid out and replaced.. you can’t get all of it because its in the lines, manifolds and cylinders

I doubt if the previous owner ever changed the fluid and you make some good points for changing out the present fluid. Thank you for that pointer, I hadn't thought about it. We bought the unit primarily because it had been used very little and stored in heated indoor storage it's entire life.
