Yes, during a long trip last summer the rod and all clothing came down. You're right, it's not built very robustly. Ours is shut up for the winter so might not be able to get pics but I found it to be a fairly easy repair.

I went to the local hardware store and bought some flat brackets. The shelf in ours is well attached to the walls so I was able to use the brackets underneath to secure the rod attachments in the middle of the shelf directly to the shelf framing. It's now quite solid and not likely to come down again.

These aren't the exact brackets I bought but they are very similar
