I worked for a Wood Finishing Company for 10 years and you NEVER put anything on finished wood cabinets, wood work etc. Clean with a mild soap and water only. Varnish and cleaners (Old English, etc.) are not a good match. I have seen the result more than once, and it is not pretty.
If the cabinets are dull looking it is because they used a satin finish, for something with more of a shine, you need a high gloss finish.
