It has a sensor to turn itself off when temps get above freezing so it won't heat your water.
I bought the "blue one"(forgot the name) for around a hunnerd bux on Amazon. I also wrapped it with the the split foam tube insulation and zip ties. While in Midland, TX last winter the temps got into the teens and remained below freezing for almost a week and I never went without water. Well until the ice storm broke several power poles and the electricity went out..haha My generator/furnace kept me warm but like a dummy I forgot about running an extension cord to the water hose.
