I haven't had this done, but a service shop has told me that the cable systems are typically dry and eventually get to a point where they don't operate very smoothly or hang up and hold the valve open or closed.

They typically grease/lube them if they replace valves or are working on the system. If you're tearing it all apart, you might check into lubing the cable system. I didn't get the details on how to do it, but there's probably a YouTube video out there somewhere.
