I have never lost a spare but read enough stories on here about people that have. Since early ownership of the 5'er I have always used a ratchet strap on the spare. Two years ago in Fla. I had to get the spare down. Was surprised, despite all the dirt and grime how easy the ratchet released. If you go this route try and find a black strap as the orange and yellow stick out like a sore thumb.
