You sound like me. I like make that love to boondock. Real boondock not with a bunch of other people. I use Delorme Topo software. It has different colors for government land, one color for BLM land a different for national forest land. If you wont to see the size say a lake or piece of land click on it and it will tell you it’s name and the size in acres.

The bad news is Delorme was bought be Garman. The good news you can still get the software on the internet. You will need a GPS puck if you track when you are on your computer. Garman offers one, I think for under $30. I use a 10 inch Windows pad, works great. If it’s isn’t available on line call me I’ll make it available to you, 540 353 0480. Leave a message and I will call back.

You can probably get a hand held Topo GPS unit but I know nothing about them.

My two favorite places to boondock is the Shirley Basin and Union Pass Wy. The Shirley Basin is 440,000 acres that you can camp on and be miles away from anyone. Union Pass is 9200 feet in elevation. It’s full of trout streams and lakes to fish in. Don’t go until the middle of July, snow. Morning will be cool in the 30s then warm up to the 70s. All the species of large game on Wy are up there. Just be SURE to take your Off insect repellent with you. You will need it in the summer or don’t go until September. You can Google both to see what they are like.
