I had the same thing in mine at the beginning of the year here in Florida. Unfortunately, mine did have eggs in it. I still haven't gotten around to blocking the back of the pin box, but "so far", no birds have nested there since it was removed.
They just remodeled our storage lot and removed all trees from the area, so hopefully this won't happen again.
