Freezer not freezing cold enough to freeze icecream.

Hey all I bought a Montana 377fl in March of this year and it has a residential fridge freezer. The freezer gets cold but ice cream does not freeze. I think it is set to -10 the lowest setting. if we have previous frozen items in the fridge they seem to stay close to frozen. Icecream sandwiches will not freeze they are mush. Thanks for any thoughts.

Mod note - moved to a new thread.

Buy a cheap thermometer to put in your freezer to get actual temp. Residential refers (like the one in your house) normally get colder than a RV reefer. RV (absorption) refers often don't get below 10 deg.

You could just get cheaper ice cream with less butterfat. The more butterfat in ice cream, the harder it is to freeze it solid.

I would contact your dealer or the refrigerator manufacture, if this is a new rig you should be covered under warranty.

What make is the refrigerator. If it's a Samsung, chances are is ice build up in the bottom (freezer drawer). No, not in the hole you can look into, behind the wall. The coils. It takes about 2 days with the refrigerator completely off for it to thaw. Unless you remove the back panel, you won't see it.

When we had problems with our freezer not freezing any more, we called Samsung and they came out and fixed it. We were at a state park in North Carolina at the time. They are good at coming out, no matter where you are located in your RV.

Now, ours was 5 years old and when the repair man came out, he said it was our fan. The fan is not just a little part that removes and then you plug in a new one. The entire panel in the back of the refrigerator is "the fan".

And yes, even though ours was 5 years old, it was still under warranty, or at least that part was. The part cost a pretty penny, but under warranty it cost us nothing. THAT was surprising. BUT!!! we did have to pay the minimum for a service call. Still, that was last August (2023) and the refrigerator has been working great again ever since. And it's been in constant use 24x7 since then, every day, as we've been hunkered down in Louisiana for the last half year.

The pic below is shows a block of ice on the cooling fins as described by Dutchman. This was my LG/Sears fridge at the S&B that got fixed under warranty in 2017. The Samsung RF18 will have a similar issue which i believe is solved by installing a different heater (????). There are youtube videos you can watch.

You know that not all ice cream will freeze hard right? Depending on the fat content of the ice cream will determine if it get very hard or stays slightly soft. This will happen even in a household freezer.

I’ve never had an RV freezer that freezes ice cream hard. It’s firm, but not solid like at home.

We roll our Samsung residential fridge out about every 6 months to clean the condenser coils. In that time they’ll develop a layer of dust that covers them almost entirely. When kept clean it’ll easily maintain below 0°F temperatures.

The problem seems to be not eating the ice cream fast enough. Mine barely has a chance to melt.
