Help needed
I installed a battery cutoff switch and it did not work. The switch has 2 terminals. I ran a cable from the negative terminal of battery to one terminal and the other terminal ran to ground (frame). Did I do something wrong?

Without seeing the directions, should work. Did you try reversing the terminals?

I agree with Mike. With that brief description sounds like it should work. Do you have pictures of the install and part number of the switch?

I believe the hot cable should be the one the switch is installed on. If you don't switch open the hot leg, you may still have voltage throughout the rig.

See if you have continuity between the two terminals on the switch in the on position ... if not return it for another. Don't buy the cheap $14 switches at say Harbor freight. They are only good for barely 100 amps. It's been widely cussed and discussed on many websites whether to switch the positive or negative terminal. Disconnecting the negative is a carry over from the automotive service practice in removing the negative lead first to prevent shorts when working around the battery. Either way will disconnect 12VDC power. I prefer switching the negative terminal just because that's how I chose to do it.

The connection you described is correct. Could be a bad switch, but check one thing...
It sounds like you are switching the negative side (which is OK, either side can be switched), but you may also have another path from the negative battery terminal to ground. Is there another cable from the battery that goes to the frame?
BTW, the switch does not have polarity - you can connect either cable to either switch terminal.

I did get my switch from Harbor Freight. I switched the negative lead. I do not have another lead to frame. I do not have continuity in the off position. I will try switching leads next time I am at trailer. Thanks for all the help!

I agree with dieselguy
Switching the negative side results from the practice of removing the negative cable when working on any battery system that uses the frame as a common negative ground so if in the process of removing the cable you wrench come in contact with the framework around the battery you don’t get sparks.
The circuit is a circle break the circle anywhere and there is no longer any continuity.

Russ, when putting in a battery cut-off switch, you should put the switch on the positive side of the battery. IMO after putting in several of these cut-offs in boats & RV's, I have found that most of them have a floating ground. That being said, the best way to avoid "power bleeding" is to put the cut-off switch on the positive side.

Putting the switch in the positive wire or the negative wire is personal opinion. As long there is a single wire from the battery post (whether it be the positive or the negative), and the switch is in series in that line, and the switch itself works, then it would be fine. It sounds as though the switch is not working. With an ohm meter across the switch terminals (with the switch disconnected from the circuit) you should see infinite ohms in the open position, and zero (or very nearly zero) ohms in the closed position. If you are not seeing zero ohms, there is something wrong with the switch.
As long as there is a single wire from the battery negative post and your switch interrupts that wire, there is no possible path for power to leak from any source. It would be no different than lifting the wire from the negative battery post.

Sounds like I did everything right. The switch must be bad or the way it mounts is grounding. Thanks all for the help.

I found my problem. Bama Camper hit it. I still had the trailer plugged into TV. I feel so stupid!
Thanks to all for the help.

I do believe others here (maybe even me) would have made the same mistake. Don't beat yourself up on this one. Thanks for posting the answer!
