Anyone test this?

I just changed my oil in my 2004 Dodge RAM 2500 5.9 Diesel. It's a great truck.
I changed it with Shell Rotella T6 5-w40.

On the jug it says it's good for 500000 between changes. - That's not 5,000 or 50,000 but a half million miles. I know oil has improved significantly over the years with synthetics but have any of you gone 500,000 between oil changes?
Does one just change the filter and add in the quart missing from the filter?
Environmentally I think this would be great. Does the engine suffer or is the oil really that good and I'm just wasting my money changing oil each year?

Bryce,

To get that kind of mileage would require regular oil analysis. Many of the commercial over the road truck companies use oil analysis to determine the condition of the oil and the need to change it.

What it really says is, using this oil will make your engine last at least 500,000 miles, but you have to change it like the maintenance schedule dictates. https://rotella.shell.com/en_us/prom...JyYW50eS5odG1s

As Bob said, It's not a half million miles on a single oil change.
I use Rotella T6 exclusively. Great oil for diesels.

I believe this is good oil and that's why I use it. The packaging is a little deceptive then. because one would easily interpret that to mean it refers to the oil in that container. I guess that's marketing.

What does Cummings say about changing your oil. Go by it. Unless Shell will replace your engine.

Our 2022 CTD requires 10W-30. We use Rotella T6 and Fleetguard oil filters exclusively at the OEM recommended intervals

Its a good oil... I run it in my motorcycles... I dont use in my truck .. older motor LBZ Duramax and I still run Delo 400 and change oil and filter every 5K miles or less..

I dont drive 10K miles in a year and wont leave the old oil in the crankcase that long

Boils down to preference....

That's what the asterisk is for, so you look for the rest of the story on the back of the container.

The rest of the story on the back didn't explain it either. It says go to the website and register.

I have used it in several diesel trucks I've owned. I prefer the 15W-40 as we stay away from the colder climates, and manual recommends it. I follow the owners manual for change intervals, far less expensive for an oil change than to change out an engine. Mine takes 10qts with filter change, do it myself for less than 80.00. Walmart will take your used oil for free to recycle.

All the engine manufacturers will tell you the interval for oil changes does not get any longer with synthetic oil.

My 2004 Dodge RAM 5.9 says 15w-40 but I'm using the 5w-40 with a Fleetguard filter because the 15w-40 wasn't available. When the engine is warm they are same viscosity anyway. Everything I've read on the Dodge forums says it's no problem. 5w40 wasn't available when the truck came out. I guess I'll find out. I've been running it fine in my diesel tractor for years too.

I do know the new full synthetic oils are much better than tradition or blends. I've got a couple of the Dodge mini vans with the 3.6. I used to put the standard napa oil in (when I would take it to a shop). After about 3000 miles (5 between changes recommended) it would start to tick.

Now I change the oils myself with Full synthetic Castrol GTX. The price is good and the engines don't tick at all. The oil still looks good even at 5000 compared to 3000 before.

I just saw an interview with one of engineers that helped develop the new Hurricane engine. It’s a 3 liter turbo with up to 540 horsepower the replacement for the Hemi. That is almost 3 horsepower per cubic inch.

He was asked about oil. He said synthetic oil was better than conventional oil it didn’t break down as fast as conventional oil and was better protection for an engine. He said it was safe to go 10,000 miles between changes because the oil was better, better base stock and better additives. Another thing that he said helped was CNC Machines. They will put every dimension exactly as designed. Conventional machines of years past will not do that.

time will tell

I can see a few people will ruin their engines because of this deceptive advertising. I can hear it now "But we put an asterisk on the statement" With the brain dead people out there today they don`t even know what that`s there for.

For whatever the reason, I’ve never gotten on the synthetic band wagon. I’ve owned a lot of trucks from new over the years, every one of them to high mileage except my last one because I retired. That one only had 150k on it over nine years. I just wanted a new truck with more creature comforts. The truck I have now tells us when to change the oil based on how the truck has been used. I don’t think the truck knows what kind of oil I put in it. Do you guys that run synthetic go past the point where the truck says “oil life - 0%” ?

I don’t run it past 0% because Ford engineers know more about this engine than I do. I do run synthetic because like the Hurricane engineer they know and have tested synthetic against regular oil and know it offers better protection especially under heavy load.

I used Shell Rotella 5/40 in my ram from new 2018 until Covid. For some resin I couldn’t buy it anywhere so I switched to AMSOIL. I liked the Shell Rotella oil, but I’m not switching back.

The days of 3000 or 5000 mile oil changes are long gone. Fram now makes a filter that says to change at 20,000 miles. In 2015 we bought a MH with a DD 13 that stated oil changes were at 35,000...or one year, which ever came first. The long haulers do not use synthetic, and run longer and harder that we ever do. I really don't see the need for synthetic....other that it makes you feel better.

Well, it’s a whole different game with Commercial Truck engines. They get there information directly from the
Manufacturers. We were doing 35K back in the late 90s and Cummins approved. Synthetic or not it up to each person needs to feel comfortable with their choice. As is said to each there own.
