Cleveland/Helen, GA
Just returned home from a weekend in our Montana. When we attended the RV show in Atlanta we received a coupon for two free nights at Mountain Lake Resort between Cleveland and Helen, GA. Mountain Lake has two campgrounds - Timber Ridge and Horseshoe Trails. Both are membership only parks. Timber Ridge is affiliated with Coast To Coast and Horseshow Trails with both Coast to Coast and RPI. This is only about a two hour drive for us and since spring has finally arrived here in GA we decided to take advantage of the two free nights to de-winterize our unit and get it opened up and cleaned for the coming camping season. The north GA mountains are beautiful and if you enjoy nature, hiking, fishing, etc. this may be an area you want to explore. Helen is a small touristy town with all buildings in German decor and some wonderful German restaurants, worth at least a day visit.
We were put in Timber Ridge at Mountain Lake. The sites are somewhat small, but have nice concrete pads and all roads (though narrow) are paved. We looked at several sites before choosing one that would accomodate the size of our unit. It did take some artful manuevers by Tom in order to get into the site. Each site also has a fairly nice deck area with grill. Both 30 & 50 amp service, full sewer hookup, and cable tv. No facitilities for building a campfire at your site, but there was a community campfire location on the lake. With membership you also have use of the clubhouse at Mountain Lakes. I would classify this as a somewhat rustic campground, but if not for the membership affiliation we probably would return for a weekend trip emphasizing that we MUST have a site that would accomodate a large unit. We chose not to take advantage of a membership therefore eliminating this campground for our future use.
We did check out other campgrounds in the area. There is also another "membership" campground in the area called Unicoi Springs. As it was a membership park we chose not to go in and listen to their membership spiel. Jenny Creek Family campground was too small and rustic for our taste. Cherokee Campground had little appeal. Very rustic with several permanent RV residents. We did not check out Unicoi State Park as they have a dump station but no sewer hook ups. Perhaps someone else who has camped there can fill us in on Unicoi. There may be other campgrounds in this area, but this completes our report on those we visited.
