TV breaks down I-26 in the mountains.
Hi
July 30 we were on our way to Sevierville, Tennessee and climbing the mountains on I-26 near Hendersonville North Carolina we experienced a loud bang and escaping air noise and the TV suddenly had no power.
I had a similar problem last July while not towing. The Intercooler pipe from the turbo charger to the intercooler had failed. I had a new one put on at that time by the dealer I purchased the truck from.
The new pipe had failed again GM wasn’t interested because it had been 367 days sense installation of a new part and they only warrant for 365 days.
At any rate I started trying g to get a wrecker large enough to tow the entire unit but there wasn’t one within 80 miles so….
I got under the hood and found I could push the pipe back in to the rubber seal. I then used a ratchet strap to hold it in. For the first time ever I had put my Scan Tool in the basement and was able to clear the codes so I had power.
Now the rest of the story:
It was one of the factory installed clamps that failed I will post a picture of it and the strap arrangement at the end of this.
After I got off and had pulled into a truck repair shop that didn’t have time to work on our truck I got on the internet and found Boyd Chevrolet Cadillac Buick dealer in Hendersonville NC. They ordered a new pipe in for 10 am the next day but the service department was booked up and they couldn’t tell when there would be an opening to repair the truck.
This was only 30 miles away so with the shop owner’s permission I unhooked the Montana and put a pin lock on and locked everything else up and drove to Hendersonville.
We had a good night’s sleep at a great Red Roof motel that allowed the dog to stay in the room with us.
We arrived at Boyd Chevrolet at 8 am.
They were great they loaned us a new 1500 pickup to go to breakfast with and we were about half way thru breakfast when they called and told us the truck was ready.
They discounted the pipe and labor so the cost wasn’t too bad.
I would recommend this dealer to anyone needing service on their GM product they were great.

If you pull a camper or anything heavy with a diesel truck and don’t carry an extra set of turbo hoses and clamps you are begging for trouble and it will eventually find you. When you loos a hose you will usually loose a clamp. The OEM hoses aren’t the best made. Get a good set of aftermarket hoses and clamps. The trouble with the OEM hoses is they are made with silicone rubber and get slick when the oil that’s gets inside the turbo gets on them and seeps under the clamps. It helps to double clamp the hoses where possible.

'the TV suddenly had no power' ummmm. initially i thought your TV broke.
never heard of a truck referred too as a tv?
on my chevy the hoses that kept coming off where the hoses running into the heater core not the turbo.

I heard that next year GM is putting heated tailgates on all their trucks. This is so your hands don’t freeze when you have to push it in the winter.

I had a clamp fail while climbing the Sierra Nevada eastbound on I80. BOOM, and no power. Was lucky because there was a turn out right there. Otherwise I would have had to block a lane, very small shoulder.
Had a spare hose clamp and got the boot attached and went to the Ford dealer in a Reno. 2 new clamps and hose installed in their parking lot and we were on our way. 8,500 miles later we got home without any other TV issues...Montana toilet broke, but got parts to fix in Montreal.
Just replaced the other turbo boots with new clamps since we are getting ready for another "loop" around this great country we live in. TIP: apply hairspray to the inside of the boots before installing. Helps "glue" them in place making it harder for them to blow off. Of course, a failed clamp is no match for hairspray.

Ford is giving away free puppies with all truck purchases. That way you aren’t walking home alone and have someone to guard you on the walk.
Ford already has the ergonomically designed tail gate. So you don’t hurt your wrists while pushing the truck out of the lane of traffic.

Yeah that is funny. However, wait till the intercooler pipe on his Ford blows off like mine did. It will be payback time for the GM guys.

Yep Ford already has heated tailgate, but Chevy has a optional battery jump start. They come in 3 sizes 1000, 2000 and a 4000 watt model. Honest this is no joke. They are listed in the options. When I was looking for my last truck I found them online at the Chevy web site. I think the cost is $99, $199 and $299.

We replaced the OEM clamps long ago. We have the hoses checked every year for any signs of wear. We installed an after market gauge in then truck that monitors every parameter that Ford monitors as well as a pyro sensor pre turbo . We run by the gauge .We monitor boost and EGT temps constantly. We do not let the boost get real high and we alarm at 1200 degrees EGT. That means we get passed a lot by other Rv,s on steep grades. Don't care how fast we climb grades but that we get to the top.

Rich the problem is they don’t wear. Oil gets under the hose and then it will slide from under the clamp. The clamp can stay on place and hose hose slides from under it. The tube has a larger diameter on the end so the hose and clamp can’t just slide off. You had yours changed so you probably are OK.

Ram has the same problem with the Cummins engine.
We spent a week at Sevierville TN and there were some Ram owners that had the same problem.
Actually this isn’t an engine problem it is the manufacturer’s problem the engine manufacturer doesn’t provide the intercooler the truck manufacturer does.
