Joining the ranks of the unemployed
Well, I just found out that I am being laid off after 11 years with my company with 4 more years to go till I was projected to retire. The contract is coming to an end and the government decided that my managerial position is no longer necessary. The work isn't going away, they are just going to add my workload onto another manager in the follow-on contract. Maybe I should consider myself lucky since I haven't been unemployed in 12 years.
The unemployment claims instructions are written in governmentese and will take some time to decipher.
You never quite understand how many people there are out looking for work until you too are also looking. Hopefully I won't become a "99er" ... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99ers
Someone once said "Being unemployed is like being retired without money or benefits" Marvelous ....
