Kayak rack for Ram mega Cab w/o Railing
My bride finally said today shes tired of hauling the 6' Yak inside the RV and wants me to look into a roof rack for my 2006 Ram mega cab. I do not have any rails on top of the pick-up. Any advise. Obviously a budget is in play. Thanks all

Thule racks for us. We got the angled mounts and it works well to put noodles on the doors, lift the kayaks on top of the doors then pivot them onto the racks. Very little wind noise and I check all the mounts as part of my checklist routine. Found them 20% off at REI, but still nearly $800.

Thule will fit, Yakima will not. I needed a front hitch and goalpost for a 12' Hobie on a 2013 Ram Mega Cab. The Thule rack has a 80 lb weight limit. My guess is a 6' yak will give you enough capacity for your yak and a bike or two.

Sounds like all the rack ideas cost more tham my Yak!!! Might have to convince Princess to allow me indoor access until further notice or buy next truck with roof rails!!!

Thule is definitely proud of their product, and I know the pain of spending more for the racks than the yaks! But...the rooftop is their permanent home so I'm hoping we get years of service from the equipment.

US Rack has a fifth wheel rack that I use for my porta bote. They have worked with me on several modifications and I would encourage you to look at their web site or give them a call.

There are some over the roof ladder racks out there that would work really well for kayaks. We have two 10' kayaks, a canoe and jon boat too so intrest in this for us as well. If you get the kind of rack that mounts on your trucks bed rails they will also serve as a headache rack to protect the corners of your truck and rear window. I have seem some folks with louvered slats that protect the rear window. Not sure if those were custom by a welder or available thru a supplier....

I did not get to see it other than in the rear view - another 5er going the other way had two kayaks standing vertically on the rear of their 5er - interesting view meeting head on - both yaks were visible from the front

I went with the Rino Rack Aero bars on my F 350. I carry 2 ten foot kayaks with no troubles. Got mine from etrailer.

My wife and I opted to do things a little differently. We found a supplier in upstate New York that builds kayak racks that fit the back end of our fifth wheel. Plugs in to a standard hitch. The part I like the best is easy to get to the kayak and easy to put back. Cables are provided to lock your kayak to the rack. All in all a complete and wonderful addition to our trailering experience. Can also be purchased to accommodate bikes. Check out YAKUPS.COM. The racks are custom built for your specific application.

mtnquail,
I have seen those and they look like just the ticket IF you don't have a toyhauler tailgate/ramp like we do. Of course having the garage means you have a place for the kayaks to go (advantage HC381TH basement garage).
