First RV trip in 1993

We flew to Calgary, rented a suburban pulling a trailer. I think it was maybe 16 feet long but picture looks smaller. We had our 17 and 11 year old kids in this tiny thing!
11 year old had to sleep in basically a fold out tiny bed at the top of the trailer and just under the roof! She was not happy. Attached is a picture of the trailer.
After using a 37 ft Mountaineer for years, how did we ever fit in this thing!?!?!?!

Yep, some of the best memories where when things were much smaller and simpler! Also, those photos bring a double edge sword too. There is the joy of remembering, and then there is the sorrow it's all gone now.

Our funniest and most memorable events was with the kids (a bit younger than yours there) and each one brough a friend along, plus our dog, and all of us in a tent... and it rained and rained and rained... and rained some more. We had water over and under us. BUT we had so much fun! Well, at the time it didn't see so, but now ... 30 years later, it sure seemed like fun!

These are the ones you remember. Many years ago we were trying to get into a boondocking spot in Idaho with a 24' bumper pull, five of us and a dog. The road was muddy and I had no business trying it, but the wife said "you can't make it in there". Challenge accepted. Came to an off-camber spot and the trailer slide down hill; within an inch or so of big trees. We tried for awhile but no way was anything moving that evening. We slept in a trailer tilted at a steep angle. The funniest part was the dog (80lb Lab); he would lay on the floor and slide to the downhill side of the trailer; get up and do it again. Next day, winching, cutting brush, digging trenches (to keep trailer from sliding) we got everything out and down to the campsite. So hot, everyone just jumped in the river. Now, how to get it out? Had to chainsaw brush to be able to turn around. I sent everyone up the hill and nailed it; made it out. Not funny then, but we sure laugh about it now.

Our first rig was an 8' cab-over pick up camper on a super-cab pickup; five of us and a dog

My brother and I used to go to Bath County Va. We would go 7 miles past the last house on the road to the end of the road and over a mile past that on a railroad. We would camp for a week to spring turkey hunt. The nearest house was 5 miles down the railroad and 7 miles up the railroad. You could have walked 4.5 mile over a mountain to a house. Most people wouldn’t believe a place like that even existed in Virginia. Where we camped is now so crowed up it’s hard to get up there. There is now a locked gate and a beaver pond blocking the road. There would usually be 2 trains come through a week an Amtrak and maybe a short work train. There was so many turkeys that unless one was on a ridge close to the tracks we didn’t even bother to hunt him. I thought that would last forever but the turkeys slowly disappeared and we continued to hunt there for twenty years. That was the most enjoyable and relaxing camping of my life.

4 of us and a dog in our first camper after the tent… an 11’ slide in truck camper.
Not as crowded in there as all of us on the way to and from the campgrounds….in that regular cab pickup.
Those were great days…
