No more Back-up Lights

Decided to spend a bit of the kids inheritance and removed the old tail and back up lights and installed 4 LED's.

Looks very nice. Those tail lights will do you more good than the back-up lights.

Jim-- Notice the first ebay site had the four but two looked smaller than the other two were they and if so did you have to do any modifying?

That is a great idea! All the back up lights have done for me is cost a few bucks at a VA safety inspection when one wouldn't work. Bulb was corroded. Can't see squat with them anyway. Wonder if LED lights in white would be brighter?

Nope all 4 are the same size and no modifying to anything. Screw holes are the same.

The OEM fixtures have a foam gasket on the back of them and I moved the gasket to the new LED fixtures.

RV White to White ground
RV Green, to Black tail lights
RV Lt stop black to red tail lights
RV Rt stop brown to red rail lights

I think they look good - but I wonder if they are legal. Aren't backup lights required? If so, it would be pretty easy to add some under the edge of the rear cap.

Tom, My trailer is tagged in Texas. Back-up lights are not required or inspected.

https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/vi...nCriteria.aspx

However. the lights that were removed had reflective rings in the lens, that satisfied the DOT requirement of reflectors. The lights I installed have no reflectors in the lens. That issue will be corrected by a stop by WM or NAPA and I'll buy a couple of stick on round reflectors and will be legal again.

Item #8 says rear red reflectors, but they do not indicate size.

https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/vi...nCriteria.aspx

These lights are normally used on over 80" trailers which have ICC tape strips so no need for the lens to have reflectors.

I'll be legal Monday.

I just did the same thing, but see my LED backup lights at the bottom of the camper mounted on the sides of the hitch.

Tom,
Did you run the backup light wire down both sides or just one side and then across the hitch?
Just purchased the 4 red LED units, but have not got the clear backup lights yet.

Tom, in Photobucket, with the picture you want to resize, look at the top bar and you will see a box with Editor in it. Click on it. it will then ask for the photo either from your computer or from photobucket Then just use the resize tool. It will make it smaller.

Play with a photo you can replace, cause you will probably screw up a couple of photographs. Easy once you use it.

Thanks Jim, but I tried to do exactly that, and I get a circle spinning around and around, and around.....

I'll try tomorrow.

Backup lights are NOT a DOT requirement! Look at etrailer.com for options on led trailer lights. The 4 inch sealed units are STL42 units and the cost is $ 17 plus $ 1 something for the wiring harness per unit... They also have nice clearance light upgrade kits, which are new lens covers that have 2 leds attached and an adapter cable with the wedge bulb connection for $ 7 each. Pull off old lens, remove old automotive bulb, plug in cable, and pop new lens in place. Available in needed orange and red for the monty. John

The LED lights are much better. I changed mine out this past summer. This picture shows the difference between the old lights (Left side) and the new LED's (Right side).

Yesterday DW followed me to our winter home after installing the 4 LED tail lights.

She said the difference was night and day. Pun intended.....

Now next project is to install side turn indicators so folks that are hanging on my back corner will know I am wanting to change lanes.

Jim

Sorry Joe, didnt see your post.

I just ran them down both sides to the new LED lights, but had to add some extra wire to reach.

Just ordered the lights off of eBay. Hoping for a warm day before I leave for Florida on December 26. If not, I will have 3 months to install them while in Florida, before returning home. Thanks for all of the photos and eBay link.

Stopped by WM. $1.97 for a pair of 4" stick-on reflectors. Back legal again.
