heat pump
I have only used my heat pump in the winter for heat. Is it better to use for cooling as well? Wondering if it works like a home system? Did not get any instructions with unit when purchased so not sure exactly how to use.

No, the heat pump is one of your two A/C units as well.

The heat pump in your camper will heat down to about 40 degrees. A heat pump should be more efficient than your furnace. A heat pump doesn’t make heat like a furnace it simply moves heat from the outside to inside exactly the opposite from an air conditioner.

The heat pump works to take the chill off when its “sorta cold”. When it gets REAL cold - the heat pump does not work so well - if at all.

Your heat pump and your air conditioner are the same machine on the roof of your camper. Think of it this way ... when they run in one position they blow cold air. When the machine run in the opposite direction it blows warm air.
Think of it like this. Stand in front of a window air conditioner. On the inside of the house the air is blowing out cold. Step outside and stand in front of the air conditioner, and the air is blowing warm.
One side is working like an air conditioner, the other side is working like a heat pump. Now imagine that window air conditioner on a turn table and you can rotate it in the window. So, in the winter, you now have the heat side blowing inside the house.
This is pretty much how the air conditioner - heat pump operate on the roof of your camper.

Yes, your heat pump and AC are the same unit. The thermostat determines which function it performs. If you want heat, select heat pump (though it will only work effectively down to about 40 deg.). If you want cooling select AC. The same unit will run in the opposite direction and pull the heat out of your rig.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I worded my question wrong. I understand how a heat pump operates but was curious about the thermostat setting. My question should have been If I have my thermostat set on 72 will it maintain 72 whether it be cooling or heating like you can set a home thermostat on an automatic setting. Thanks everyone.

You have to manually set it to AC or Heat Pump.

No, not with the thermostat that comes in the rig. You can upgrade to a Microaire Tstat that will give you more programable options

Your heat pump is exactly like a regular AC but has a reversing valve so heat is put in the building instead of being removed. Using a heat pump for heating down to 35-40 is cheaper than running the propane furnace. After that the heat pump is too inefficient so propane is better then.

Heat pump disaster in freezing temp.
No Kidding. This is what happened to our heat pump when it dropped below freezing.
Oops, don’t have a clue as to why pic is upside down…🤷*♀️

Hopefully you weren’t running your heat pump when it was freezing. They don’t really help much below 40 degrees. At that point you need to use your propane furnace.

These heat pumps aren’t very efficient. When it gets down to more than cool just cut on the furnace.

I’m a new owner of a 2019 331rl, It has a heat pump, I am not familiar with them. It is about 40 degrees out and dropping ti mid 30’s. The heat pump/air conditioner will continue to run but you can hear the compressor go off after awhile, then go back on.
Does it hurt to leave on all night? Or because so cold, shut off and run furnace?
Your help appreciated. Dont know anything about heat pumps.
Thank you

Personally, I would run the furnace if it's going to be mid 30's. You might be OK but that's pushing it's capabilities.

although in the 30's it will not happen but remember that no heat goes into the bays with the heat pump. you need the propane furnace to supply air to the bays

The heat pump heats and cools. Love that feature on our Montana fifth wheel trailer and motorhome. Works just like one on a home.
We do not run it at night since the temperature cools suffiecently by early evening where we camp. Besides a little noisy. Use the electric fireplace to heat the trailer during the night.

New modern heat pumps an operate down to -20 degrees. The one we have in our home will operate down to 5 degrees at or above it’s rated capacity. That is it’s a 36000 BTU unit and will have over 36000 BTUs at 5 degrees and will operate down to —15 degrees. We had a geothermal unit before the mini split. The geothermal was the most efficient heating unit made when we got it. The mini split is cheaper to run than the geothermal.
If you need or will need a heating system or AC in the near future and your climate isn’t too cold check a new heat pump system out. Your heating and cooling bill will go down.
