CO 550 south to Ouray

I've seen many comments about 550 north from Durango but any experience on going south from Montrose to Ouray? It looks less hairy than some of the feedback on the north from Durango leg but wondering who can give some first hand info?

Its been 20 yrs since I took that route pulling a popup, and I remember that south of Ouray was the scary part…not the section north of Ouray. Here are some screen shots of comments from another forum (IRV2)…

I drove it twice last week. Ouray to Montrose is flat, 2-lane highway. No issues at all.

Used to live in Grand Junction, CO and spent a lot of time camping in the area around Ouray. The drive from Montrose to Ouray is easy and no problems, from Durango thur Silverton and up to Ouray is nothing short of exciting to say the least. I've pulled a 35' 5th wheel up the south side and really do NOT look forward to doing it again, ever!!! By the time we reached the summit, the divorce lawyer was all ready on the phone and my wife had it all buttoned up. Now the ride down from the summit into Ouray confirmed all her complaints and the attorney was certain of her victory!!!!!! Enjoy the area but please be safe out there amongst em!!!!

We’re just going from Montrose to Ouray and the. Back up again heading to Breckenridge, celebrating or 30th this months, sounds like we’ll have many more as long as we don’t go further south!

Yes, but it's worth it; beautiful country. Pulled into this campsite between Silverton & Ouray today.

Us 550!

For the past 8 years we have stayed near Durango for the summer and taken a truck only trip from Durango north to Ouray on US 550. All the comments are true--suggest a truck only trip initially and then decide if you want to pull the Monty. As you head into Ouray, stop at the scenic overlooks and listen to the 18 wheelers running over the rumble strip in the center of the road. Kind-of- sobering! And those guys get paid to drive!
