Dress Up The Pinbox

Greetings, Just wanted to throw this out there for other owners input. I am retired and have a hobby of making flower boxes that fit on the extended pinbox of our Montanas. The original flower box I made is made of cedar. I have had people stop by my site and compliment me on it. Some have said I should sell them. It's a lot of work to make these and quite expensive for the material. I use solid commercial grade vinyl, stainless steel or brass screws. I asked my wife how much I could get for them and she said around $40. . I have about $45 in material! I would have to get around $100 to make it worth my while. Have not sold any yet but really do like to make them. Also, not intending to start a business, just want to build boxes to make it worth my time. Any comments would be appreciated.

It's novel and certainly dresses up the pinbox. I've never seen this done before. Nice work!

VERY nice, like, like, like.

Trouble is, that as with so many craft/art projects, we end up with more $$ and time in them than we can sell them for.

There is always the, find cheaper materials, answer. But, have a feeling, that is not going to be acceptable to you.

Put a price on there, see if you get any real nibbles, like in, they lay the ca$h in your hands. If, no one bites at $100.00, see if they will lay forth the ca$h if you price it at $90.00.

Do a little real market research and see what happens. If people buy at a price you feel comfy with, sell away, happy building. If no one antys up with the ca$h at a price you can afford to sell at, time to move on and find something else that is as cute as this is to enjoy building.

I am sure a lot of gals could come up with some ideas/improvments. they would like done.

Good luck, and the fence is D-A-R-L-I-N-G!!

I love to do wood work Bob but as with you I have to give my works to family. I don't think I have ever made anything that I could sell and break even on. Kids will say oooohh I want that and DW looks at me and gives it to them!!!. But it is fun to do. and now I have to look at making a flower box for a pinbox. LOL

Seems like if you are just doing for a hobby, then selling to recoup your costs should be enough. If you are going to make a business of it, then good luck. If you want a personal opinion regarding price, I would not pay $100 for one, maybe around 40-60 but certainly no more. Perhaps you could do different motifs, maybe a castle or the Alamo or something on those lines. You also have a limited clientele, ie. fiver owners only.......Nice work though!!!!!

Very nice, but as with my hobby project, if I can recoop cost of materials, I am happy.
Now about your invention, I have a Trail Air pin box and don't I don't see that fitting on mine because of the shock asorber.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I do plan to put a couple on E-Bay and see what happens. Time will tell. Also, to "indy-roadrunner" you may have seen in my signature that I too have a Trail-Air pinbox on our Mountaineer. That is why the pics were not taken on our unit. The photo's in my post above were taken at an RV lot. My daughter works in RV sales and I was able to use their facility for my photos. I am waiting for my wife to make up her mind which flowerbox model she likes best as I will begin to make one for the Trail-Air. The wooden one we have currently was modified to fit the Trail-Air. It just had to be modified to make room for the shock mount and the Schroeder valve. See wooden box on Trail-Air below.

My daughter wants me to make one for her travel trailer that fits on the propane tank cover. Will have to see how that works out.
Thanks again for your much appreciated input.

Nice looking addition! $100 isn't that much when you consider Lippert's pinbox cover just cost me $190 delivered and I had to install.
