Ice makers
We are thinking of adding a portable ice maker. Would like to have suggestions both of good experiences and models to avoid.

We use our Magic Chef full time and love it. This is our second one, with the first one lasting four years. When it finally bit the dust we bought an Emerson from Target. I think it worked a week. Found the second Magic Chef at Kohl's with a 30% discount. I will continue to go back to this product as it is easy to clean and is a work horse. All ice machine get an algae build up in them, so it is important that you can get to the parts to clean.

We had the Black and silver one form Camping World it lasted about 3 years and worked well. It made enough ice that we diden't have to keep running to the store. We just dumped it in the ice chest or filled our glasses. You just Need to remember to put water in it, and empty it. But Im getting ready to order this one from Lowes and give it a try.

We got the Camping World $200 model (I think its Dometic) it lasted 5 months and is now in the basement idle. I will look in to warranty or fixing it myself after we get back home in July. We used distilled water/or purchased drinking water, but still got the algae that needs to be cleaned up often and it does not come apart for cleaning.

Most of them are actually the same unit, just cosmetic changes(look at front panel similarities). That said mine is a Magic Chef and the only problem I've had were some bad micro switches after a couple of years. Replaced them with some better switches and still going strong after 5 years and a lot of ice.

Like previously mentioned, I think most all the @$120 units are the same machine with a different badge on the front. Emerson from Target here ... 4 years, lotsa ice, no issues.

Have two Emersons from Target. One is about 3 years old the other two. Great ice makers. One or the other of them is used daily depending if we are home or at the rv.

We bought the Emerson from Target about 3 months ago. Around $100.00 on sale. We did do the extended warranty for $10.00 so it is gauranteed for 3 years. We really like it but that being said it is another job to watch it and dump it. We do like the convience of always having ice. We pack the extra ice in bags and put it in the freezer. Gets harder and always ice available. It has it's pro's and con's. If it just would keep the ice frozen after making it I would love it. Still better than buying ice everyday. It does not make enough ice to keep a large cooler going however. It does keep a med. size cooler for daily beach trips etc.

Thank you for your input. It helped us make a decision. We went with the Magic Chef. It seemed to have the best price at Walmart.
