Trailer brakes
Horrible news today, about $1500 to replace drums, brake shoes, and wheel bearings. About 16-20K miles on 21/2 yr old trailer. Had wheel bearings replaced in April 2013, no indications of unusual brake wear by people doing work.
Just came back from trip in Calif. mountains, noticed severe decline in braking ability. Took to repair facility. - drums scored so bad could not be turned. Two of shoes had pieces broken off. Wheel bearings OK, but told should replace due to new drums and old bearings already seated in old drums.
I make an extra effort to use engine braking in the mountains and not to ride the brakes, but obviously I'm doing something wrong! Extended warranty does not cover brakes, and not sure if a call to Dexter would be productive. In the future I'm going to have brake shoes inspected closely more often.

You can convert to disc brakes for that same $1500! THAT'S what I would do.

I also think the price is high. The parts can be purchased from Etrailer.com for around $700

If you're going to pay that much I would definitely look into switching to disk brakes. We went that way and wouldn't go back.

I checked and was told converting to disc brakes would be way more than $1500 due to need to purchase a hydraulic pump. I don't know enough about a disc brake conversion to argue, but my repair facility said they do not have electric disc brake conversion kits as they all require hydraulics.
I did contact Dexter and they may help. They will decide tomorrow morning, so thx for advice to contact them.

The pump itself costs about $700.

I'm sure that included labor, and that would make sence.

Hi
It sounds high to me as well.
I would look in to a pair of new 8K Lippert axels. I am not a fan of Lippert but I saw a pair of them and the drums are much wider than Dexter’s and would give you a better brake.
