Grease on brakes

New on here so please be patient with us. Recently had a wheel bearing leak and the grease got on the brake pads on one wheel. I was told that the leak was bad enough that it is all over the brakes (electric) and the backer plate. I was also told I would have to replace all of the backer plates and brakes as I should not replace only the one that was leaking. This does not sound correct to me. I don't see how the grease would reach the other wheel on the opposite side of the trailer, nor the other axle....yes, it is tandem axles. FYI, this is a relatively new rig, a 2020 Keystone Montana High Country. We have only put on about 8,000 miles on it. Would appreciate some expert advice on this. Thanks

Cliff,

First - welcome to the forum!

You need to replace the brakes on both sides of the axle but not normally both axles.

Grease on the brakes often happens when someone adds grease to the bearings via the zerk fitting in the axle. To repack bearings they should be done by hand. This permits cleaning and inspection of brakes as well as inspecting bearings.

Replace both sides the plate shoes and all You unbolt them put the new ones in and done. They are cheap 50 or 60 bucks.

I just picked up a couple here in Minnesota from a regional wholesaler. They were Dexter for 8K and were a little over $100, retail was now $135. I have been getting parts there for years and have checked vs. online (didn't this time because I was in the middle of the job) and they have been the same or cheaper. The person I always work with said many of the parts have went up a lot.

I agree with AZ Traveler just do the one axle

Same thing happened to us. We had a 2019 3120 with what I thought were weak brakes on the initial outing. Looking underneath there was grease coming from 2 of the 4 drums. Pad area was filled with grease. This camper had so many issues it was replaced after one week of ownership with a new 2020 model.. I looked underneath at home and saw the same thing on just one drum. I took it apart and sure enough the cavity was filled with grease. I'm sure somebody with a automatic grease gun at the factory lost track of time watching a video and blew the seal.

Dealer sent me 2 new assemblies after I refused to let them touch it.

Seeing you have a 2020 I would bet that they were overfilled from the factory unless you have pumped them up with grease? This should be a warranty issue.

You DON'T need to replace the other three, that's baloney. If they're the never adjust version, they're a bit pricey. I found them for $193 a pair (left and right) on e-trailer.com, so I guess it makes sense to replace both on one axle.

I would not worry about the second axle, but I would inspect, as grease on brakes tells me a hub seal failure. I would replace both sides, so you do not have uneven wear between the two wheels.

I've had grease on the brakes most times I've had the wheel bearings repacked. It'll usually 'burn' off in the first 50 - 100 miles. Just be careful until you know the grease is gone.

Bill,

Maybe you need to find someone new to repack your bearings. A good tech should not get any grease on the brakes or drums.

AZ Traveler put it very diplomatically. And to further the thought ... unless it's a tiny speck ... grease doesn't "burn off" a brake shoe ... it just gets slimy and glazed over. Now maybe if you had a blow torch .........

I’ll confirm what Az Traveler and diesel guy said. We had a shop repack bearings. A new kid came along and gave a squirt in the zerks. We ended up needing 4 new drums and all the rest of the hardware. It does not burn off. Fortunately, the shop picked up the cost.

If your shop used a powered lube gun, and they did a wheel bearing inspection (??) there is probably close to a 100% chance that that so called tech blew grease past the seal. If you look at those seals, you will find that they are far from optimum even usual the double lipped type.

There is only one safe way to lube those bearings and that's the grungy, dirty, slimy way and hand packing the old fashioned way. Yes, you can jack the axle, spin the wheel and use a hand grease gun on that Zerk but that's a stop gap measure until the grungy way - and according to Dexter as well as LCI, it's every 12,000 miles or 12 months which ever comes first. The 12 months, in my opinion is CYA but 24 months or thereabouts is just good maintenance practice.

If you have grease on linings, they are junk. If you have grease on the drum, clean it up with a good solvent, install the freshly hand packed bearings and a NEW seal and be on your way. Also, find a competent shop and tech if for some reason you can't do the work yourself.

Oh and another note - Dexter shipped two new axles to me for our last 5er when I switched from Nevr Lube axles. All four axle ends had contaminated linings directly from the manufacturer. Dexter overnighted all new brake linings to me.

Correcting my post #8, the Nev-r-Adjust brakes are $398 a pair at e-trailer.com.

Dexter Parts Online shows the brake assemblies, left and right, at $125 each. Almost $400 for an axle set is way too high.
