Freightliner Sportchassis

Just read on another forum that the new FL Sportchassis has a "super single" option rather than dual rear wheels. The size is 445/50R16.

Over on the HDT forum there is a recurring thread about super singles versus duals. As I remember, the consensus is that the duals provide additional safety and convenience: lose one single and you're out of action, lose one dual and you can at least limp along. If you lose a steer tire, you can also use one of the duals as a replacement to keep you going.

There were some other comments about differences in highway versus off road application and traction that are probably worth considering, too.

Then, for me, there's the cost of the rims (astronomical) as well as the tires.

Not to mention even being able to find tires! I did a quick Google and came up with nothing!

This sounds like one of those nice features that falls under the category - "If you are worried about the cost or availability, don't bother looking into it". Us normal (or can't-afford-to-be-first) folk wouldn't know where to find fancy stuff like the fat wheels and tires, but I am now seeing enough of them to know they are out there and available. I'll wait for deeper-pocketed individuals to post the answers. Some people will do ANYHING just to say they want to stick to SRW vehicles...

I wonder if LonnieB can give us some insight and his experiences with these. I would imagine new tire store equipment would be in order, too. Can you imagine the weight of these beasts?

445/50R16? I believe there was a typo somewhere. The only 445/50R-anything that I know of is the 445/50R22.5. The hub and brake assembly on the Sport Chassis is way to big for a 16" wheel.

As to super singles vs duals, most of the big trucks around here that were running super singles have converted to duals. The biggest reason was mentioned by firetrucker. If you have a flat and do not have the ability to change it, you are stuck on the road until a service truck can get to you. Traction is another problem. The wide profile of the 445mm tire will hydroplane on wet pavement much quicker than duals and if you happen to get into a little mud you stand a much greater chance of becoming stuck.

Yes, the cost is in the astronomical range. The tires range anywhere from $920.00 to $1050.00 each, for Bridgestone or Michelin. The wheels are around $800.00 each.

They do look cool though

They are some neat looking trucks. I just looked on the web site and that tire is 22.5".

That pretty much explains why Google results were nil.
