Chevy Front End Noise...FYI

I had an irritating noise in the front end...sort of a rattle that happened mostly while in a turn on any road that was not perfectly smooth. Took it to my friendly dealer and explained the noise. As soon as I was finished, the service manager, several techs and even a salesman standing there all chimed in together..."it's the intermediate steering shaft."

It seems to be a problem GM wide as one tech said his wife's Pontiac had the same problem. It is a rod about 17" extended, and 10" retracted...it goes in and out when you turn. The problem is that it looses it's lubrication and the noise is the tube binding as it moves in and out. The new rod is supossed to have teflon parts that will eliminate the problem.

The warranty paid for the hew shaft.

and it is a common problem in GM trucks. Just annoying, has no affect on steering or safety, but the rattle will continue.

As noted in the OP...it's called the intermediate steering shaft and was covered by warranty. This is my fourth GM truck, first experience with this problem.

You're lucky. GM has had this problem since the 90s. Mine was replaced under warranty too; new one is rattling 30K miles later.

The teflon part would be a new development in this ongoing saga. Wife hates that noise/feel when driving. I ignore it. As mentioned it is not a safety issue, so I will continue to ignore it - unless that new teflon part is REAL cheap.

Seems we had a thread on this many moons ago. IIRC, this is the 2 piece section of the steering shaft that is made to telescope in case of front end impact. One thing I also recall; someone on here said they didn't have ability to steer after the replacement. Apparently the mechanic forgot to put the bolt back through the end of the shaft.

I had the truck in at about 30K miles, and they lubed this shaft. Didn't last til the water got hot. Then I read about the service bulletin over on the DP site, and they agreed to install the new shaft under warranty. Oh well, we've just learned to live with it. It is annoying though, at low speeds on a rough road.

Had this problem in both the 03 Chev and the 05 GMC. In the Chev they replaced the shaft and I never had the problem again. In the 05 GMC they lubed the shaft and the problem did disappear. After 60,000 additional miles on the GMC I have not had any further problems.

When I researched this back in 04 I found the problem really started in the 98/99 model years and only in Chev and GMC 1500, 2500 and 3500 models. At that time there was no mention of any autos.

I've noticed the seem rattle lately in my 05 GMC. I have around 65000 on mine. I'll try the lube first.
Thanks for the Info.

Not fixing a problem they are aware of is one of the reasons they are in the problems they are in. One would think that after all those years they would have taken care of the problem. How much can one grease zerk cost?

It's not just GM that doesn't do their homework on problems that have crept up like this one mentioned above! All of the manufacturers ignore stuff like this! I don't think any of the engineers/designers for any of the manufacturers ever check the problem logs of any dealership or national complaints that come in. They just keep the same things going if they work for them in their designs! I had this problem back in the last 90's with my 1500 but as said previously, the problem never came back after I took it in the initial time of complaint!

Well, IF they actually do have a new part with teflon bushings, perhaps they have finally fixed it.

I have a 2000 Bonneville SSEI with the same problem. Have had it replace when it was under warranty. Anymore they just lube it every time I have it serviced at dealership. Have a 2002 GMC and I have never had a problem with it. I think it has something to do with the height adjustable steering.... Could be the driver of the Bonneville...DW. Hope she don't read this...JB

I drilled the steering shaft and did the grease cert install and 3000 miles later NO chatter. Go to the Diesel Place do it your self for the instructions.

This has been a known problem with 2005 & 2006 models. Seems they (GM) still didn't get it right if the problem persists with the 2007 models. The Technical Service Bulletin is 05-02-35-003B, dated January 27, 2006. PM me if you are interested in the text of this TSB if you cannot find it for yourself.

There is a "band aid" fix if you want too. You can put a hose clamp around the steering column under the dash and stop the rattle and the vibration. 5 minute fix.

I saw on the DP site where they actually used a zip tie. Said it was easier and worked as good as a clamp. Think that will be my fix this time.
