Valve stems

My TPMS detected a leak on a tire on my 2010 model 3150 with Bridgestone Duravis R500HD tires. After getting off road found leak was from around the valve stem. I have read that with the monitoring system I should have all metal valve stems installed to preclude this type of problem. My problem is I took tire to large tire repair facility and they said they couldn't install metal valve stems as there wasn't room enough to get locking nut on. Any suggestions from anyone? Rims are factory installed alloy rims which came on the rig when new.

Yes he is correct, but, They also make all metal valve stems with the nuts on the end of the stem . The nuts would be on the inside of the rim. Just google Enkei valve stems.

Guess I am confused. When I bought my last Montana and immediately went to Firestone Dealer to get rid of the Marathons, they installed steel stems and extenders for me with absolutely no problem.

I think it's a matter of how hard they want to work and if they happen to have the right parts in stock. I imagine there might be different size nuts for different wheels and since these might require more work, then a lazy tech might be able to talk you out of them.

When I got my new tires for the truck, I specifically asked for metal stems after giving them the year/model truck I had and the size of rim and five tires worth of business (America's Tire this time). Since they provided my new spare they have the parts for that too. I had no issues.

You'll need to get to a more capable tire store to get these installed and they will probably charge for labor if you aren't getting any other business from them. I think it's a good idea to consider putting a monitor on the spare, too, hence it will need a metal stem, too.

I had a similar problem when changing Marathon tires to GY614s. Finally contacted the rim distributor used by Keystone and they sent the correct all metal valve stems to the dealer to install.

I can assure you the washer and nut would't fit in the hole in the rim. the Enkei stem has the shoulder on the outside which fits in the hole and the nuts on the bottom (inside) the rim. There is another stem forget the name but, it has a sleeve that slides into the hole with the nuts on the outside. the sleeve raises the nuts above the surface of the rim.

I have had mixed results on the steel valve stem installation. I just believe it has more to do with the particular tire shop than the actual stem. If they don't have it and I will never return (I am traveling)-- just say it can't be done. I usually get it done at home at a complete tire shop.

I don't have all metal stems, however they are not rubber either. They look gold/bronze, are would they be ok to use.

I too wanted to replace my valve stems, but was not sure which ones to get. I called Tredit(where our rims come from) and they sent me the following:

Myers Valve Bottom Clamp in DBL nut, .453, 200 PSI, 1 – 1/8 inch, 24-123

They are suppose to be the exact ones to fit our rims.

My tire store, a Firestone company operated store, explained to me [ a Firestone retiree] that the bronze or copper colored stems are to be used when there is insufficient clearance on alloy wheels for a conventional steel stem- The replacement stems have a base larger than the hole in the rim so the stem can't blow out- Also, this stem must be removed from the inside only- Don

For the aluminum wheels on probably the last 3 - 4 years of Montanas (my 3150 included), the issue with the metal valve stems is as Swanny (Kevin) stated ... the clearance hole on the outer rim is only 17mm in diameter. One would be somewhat hard pressed to find a traditional metal stem that inserts from the inside of the rim that can be secured. The stem goes in the hole for sure, but you cannot fit the washer let alone tighten the nut in the 17mm clearance hole on the outer surface of the rim. The Enkei type metal stem does work here as it installs from the outside of the rim and has 2 lock nuts that secure it from the inside of the rim. Perhaps the Meyers stem is of the same design.

Dieselguy,
Yes that is exactly the way my Myers valve stems are, 2 nuts screwing on from the back.

Appreciate the responses to my question. I will definitely be ordering the correct stems to use on my rims as I did experience the type of failure that other people have had using the TPMS with transmitter screwed onto stem. Thanks again.

Before I purchase the TPMS, I'm still a little confused on the valve stems. I have new G614s and the stems are rubber near the bottom and bronze/gold color (about 3/4 in) for the rest of the stem and they are not rubber. Also, should/do I need to get a sensor for the spare tire. Thanks.

That is the same stem which is on my camper and one of them has failed so far. I believe they are only rated for 80 psi and not recommended for use if installing the TPMS.

yes they are a high pressure stem, but, with the rubber base they will fail.

Hmmmm-----A TST retailer told me my gold stems were good to go and I would not have any problems, I'm glad you all gave me the right info.
