We chose to live in the country many years ago when we first got married. When we started RVing, it turned out to be a bonus because we can keep the RV in the driveway.

Seven years ago we had friends come and stay with us with their travel trailer which they pulled with a class B motorhome. They were supposed to be be here for two weeks as she was having eye surgery in our area. There were issues and it stretched to five weeks. While here, they decided to sell the trailer and buy a fifth wheel. They also bought a truck. So before we knew it, we had two big fifth wheels in the driveway (one being ours), a travel trailer, two trucks and a motor home. Our driveway is only 100 feet long. My car was parked across the street.

Because we are in the country (actually at the edge of a small hamlet), no one complained. They eventually sold the travel trailer and took everything else home. By the way, we had a blast while they were here and missed them after they left. Living in the country has its benefits.

Unless your storage agreement clearly states the facility has no responsibility for theft or damage, I'd go after them for at least the difference, and maybe then some, and lawyer cost if possible. It might fit into small claims court.

Socinc, it was located at Store-it, in Meridian, Idaho. I believe trailer was taken to Copart in Nampa, ID. joe.

Phillyg, Their contracts are very solid. With my experience with Lawyer's it would not be worth it. In hindsight I could have insured the trailer for replacement value vs. agreed value. However, at the time, agreed value seemed OK. I certainly didn't foresee the dramatic increase in RV prices this past year. I do believe prices will come down, just don't know if we want to put a trailer back into a storage unit. Thanks, joe.

Joe & Rita, did the suspect have a storage unit or space at your facility? Glad they made an arrest, and I hope he get's something. Had this been in California, the suspect would have been home before the officer started their report. I hope your insurance company gives you a fair price for your rig, it really looked very nice with the full painted rear cap. I can only hope you can get another one and store it elsewhere. Sorry this happened to you.

We keep our RV at a boat dealer's facility...50' x 20' covered, locked, with power and a live on site guard. If you have any boat facilities, check them.

Bartman, I don't think he had a storage unit at the facility. However, it's still an ongoing investigation as several other units were broken into. The thief is still in jail, unbailable due to a Parole violation. Current charges are only for drug use/possession. Insurance companies, Progressive and USAA both handled this very well. Very happy with their service. joe

Thanks for the info Joe, it's my law enforcement curiosity that made me ask....glad he is still in the slammer. Hopefully they can compile multiple cases against him and give him some serious time. I hope you plan to get another one.

Sorry this happened to you. We are fortunate to store ours in enclosed and gated storage. All units have roll up garage doors so the contents cannot be seen. All units are alarmed as well. Glad the insurance paid quickly.
Is it me or does it look like the back window isn't broken?

Sorry for your loss!
For as much time as the thieves needed to remove that much stuff...I believe the police should look at the employees of that "secure" joint!

JoeUSNRET, have you considered an alarm system for the RV. With switches on front door and all storage doors. The inside could have a motion detector too. The noise from the alarm may be enough to scare someone away. They are pretty loud.

So sorry for your loss and $23K is not even an adequate down payment on your next unit. Most storage facilities are in industrial or rural areas and security is very lax. I'm in one like that now, myself. $95 a month in an open lot, uncovered. I've been accepted into a new storage area, covered with trickle 20 amp power - $240 a month. Move in is Feb, 2022.

National General ~ bought new. 1st 5 years they replace new with a like model. Next 5 years they pay the amount you paid.

A 2018 Montana was totaled by a tornado while in storage. Progressive paid in 6 weeks, just $31,000 less than he owed.

Wife is looking at a new 3855 BR next week. Our 2019.5 3761 FL will be going. In great shape except for 1 sofa.

Joe,
Man I'm sorry to hear this happened to you guys. We live in Meridian and store our 5th wheel as well. So far we haven't experienced any devious activity but we're always wondering if it will happen.
Please let me know if I can do anything to help!!

UPDATE: Police found 2 storage lockers full of stolen stuff today. I got back a few of the parts and some items that were stolen. However, the trailer is already gone . Just found out the thief has been bailed out of jail already, which occurred on the same day they found the 2 storage lockers full of stolen stuff. it looks like he was living in one of the lockers. I'm going to start another thread for suggestions to get a security alarm/system for a trailer in storage. not sure what is available. Thanks for everyone's kind responses. Joe

Sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you are able to replace this with something. We have a storage place in town and in the agreement, the lot owner is held harmless. You're correct - they are nearly impossible to find. We're just down the road from you in Utah.

Joe, I don’t know if there is internet available there? We are fortunate that our Montana sits next to the house, but I have a Blink camera on my unit even at home. I have my T-Mobile router running in the camper. The Blink camper stores on a local disk and to the cloud. The nice thing about Blink, is you can have multiple sync modules on the same account. We have one module for cameras at home and another for the Montana. The cameras have a two year battery life with infrared and motion activation. Best of luck.

Curious as to where your Montana was stored. I see you’re from Boise. Our Montana is stored in a lot in Boise. Can you tell us what Storage lot you were in?
