Hitch too low?

I put the B&W companion hitch in our new (to us) 2021 F350 to pull our Montana Legacy.


after I got the hitch in....it looks awfully low.
I took a measurement, the hitch is about 4 inches below the bottom of the board that is across the top of the frame rails. pix attached (sorry about the pix....must have moved while taking the picture)


is that hitch really supposed to be that far below the bed rails? I had bought the hitch used from another gentleman that had sold his camper but the buyer didn't want the hitch....(seller had a Ford with the puck system, buyer had a GM)


Puck system went right in....but would have thought the 5th wheel plate would be closer to the top of the bed rails.


Insights and suggestions most welcome....don't want to tear up the truck and RV on maiden voyage.

Hitch up to your fiver and measure from the nose overhang (technical phrase) to the top of the bedrails. Only true way to tell how much clearance you will have. Most shoot for 6" clearance - I'm running 7 ½" over my Ram

Remove the head from the base and move the 2 vertical supports up to the middle set of holes. I have a Companion on my 2020 F350 and have good bed clearance.

I have the same hitch on my 2014 F350. I moved it down to the middle position to get the 5'er more level when towing. It sits about 3" below my bed cover now. I have about 8" clearance at the bed rails.
Also, you can reverse the position forward and rearward on the uprights that hold the pivoting head. B&W has an installation guide on their website.

The same hitch sits 4” below the bed rails on my same 2021 F350. I just measured it.
Of course, how it all sits when hitched up is what matters

If your F350 is a long bed I'd recommend having the support arms set forward. Also, I think most of the late model 350s with Companion hitch are using the middle height. Arm forward on middle holes is how I set mine (after reading this forum, thanks all!) when we went to pickup our new 3121RL. Worked just fine - the photo in my signature is on the way home from the dealer.

The height depends on the bed rail clearance. Some people get by with six inches. I like and need more. If you are are traveling on nice smooth roads you can get by with six inches if you watch pulling into filling stations and anywhere the road is uneven. Six inches and I would destroy my truck. I go off-road and haft to be very careful about the camper contacting my truck. I’ll take my camper some people wouldn’t take their truck.

Looks pretty typical, but hook up and measure truck clearance and check if trailer is level to very slightly nose low, NEVER nose high.
