National Park Military Lifetime Passport

I'm not sure if it has been announced on the forum yet, but, on Veterans Day 2022 the National Park Service announced that veterans are now eligible for the Military Lifetime Pass. Previously, this was only available to retirees. If you are a veteran, you can get this free instead of the $80 Senior Lifetime Pass. All you have to do, is show up at a national park with your Veterans Identification Card. Check the website to see which national parks have them available. I'd call before going; I got mine today at Mesa Verde and they said they just received them yesterday.

Website with details: https://news.va.gov/110751/free-life...ational-parks/

If you are a veteran, you should get a Veterans Identification Card from the VA. You can use it wherever military discounts apply. The application can be completed on-line.

Edit: The VA used to issue physical cards, but it appears they have moved to a "digital card" that you keep on your phone.

Thanks Scott! I tried requesting a Veterans ID Card and boy was that a mess. I was previously authenticated by www.id.me.com for a Veterans discount from Verizon. For the VA they wanted even more data, (drivers license pics and such) which I provided. They authenticated all of it and passed it off the the VA. But when I click on the "Request a Veterans ID Card" it fails with a message that they can't find my records in their system. Of course, human assistance is no where to be found. Oh well, another day I will try again.

I finally got the web system to work and it gave me my digital card. I just forgot to follow up.

Mea culpa.

He is talking about the Veterans ID card. It can be used to verify your veteran status. For awhile, the VA was sending out plastic Veteran ID cards but they have now gone digital. I guess you just wave your phone at the vendor to prove veteran status.

The NPS passes are still plastic cards.

Thanks for the info. I am an Air Force retiree and I had not heard about the free pass. I bought the Senior Pass a few years ago on the very last day it was only $10. I had just gotten old enough and we went up to Shenandoah to leaf peep. While waiting in a long line to enter I noticed the big sign saying I qualified for the senior pass. Since it cost $10 and normal entry was $20, I asked the ranger if I could buy it and use it immediately and he said yes. I thought what a deal! As he handed it to me he said that I was lucky cause the price was going up to $80 the next day. So I got a real deal purely by chance. We have saved hundreds of dollars using that card in the last 5 or 6 years. Now I learn that maybe I paid $10 too much as a retiree. Oh Well...... haha.

Don't feel too bad. I bought the $80 pass a couple years before the military pass was extended to veterans. Still a good deal; some parks charge a $35 entry fee.
