NC Outer Banks

DW loves beaches. on an email it was listing the ten top Outer Banks CG. I was out there last century in a car.

Has anyone camped out there?

Is RV access only from the north or are ferries RV friendly?

Any place or time of year that should be avoided?

OB r great! We have 33 ft 5th wheel. No problems.
We camped at cape hatteras ( the end of OB), Oregon Inlet national seashore Campground, waves campground. Depends on what u like….fishing, sight seeing etc.
if u go….u must go to occacroke island. They do have camping there and you can take your RV on the ferry… But I would never do that because it’s very tight on the ferry. If you have a car or a truck… You can take that on the ferry for free if you take the ferry from the Cape Hatteras site. We bicycles in 13 miles… It’s a beautiful bike ride… And it’s straight into the city of occacroke. Such a charming town with great history and good food! Again it’s all free whether you bring a bike a car… And for yourselves if you take it from the Cape Hatteras ferry. Feel free to PM me and I could give you things to do!
We typically go before the season opens. We have never gone during the season.

We have stayed on the OBX several times.
Ocracoke Island is our favorite. We stay at the NP Campground.
Reserve on

You are dry camping (no water, electric or sewer). They have a dump station across the road on the way in.
You can fill your freshwater tank there at the potable water faucet or inside the Campground if you have a water bladder.
Generators are OK. They do have quiet hours.
We camped there this year in March. It was unusually cold. We ran out of propane. They do not have propane refills on the island. Had to buy a 20lb tank for the last couple of days.
Take your bikes.
They are very good at guiding you on/off the ferry. You have to book the ferry to Ocracoke in advance.
If you come in from Cedar Island, do NOT fill up with water on Cedar Island. It has the egg smell to it.
We have also camped at Oregon inlet. They do have water and electric sites available here.
And we have stayed at Hatteras KoA. Get the large sites. More elbow room. The other sites are a little tight. If you have kids they will love it. They have many organized activities for them.
Check out the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum and the Wright Brothers memorial.
Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular
